Bassenthwaite

An idyllic setting
The small, charming village of Bassenthwaite sits a
mile and a half from the lake of the same name. The
huge, brooding presence of Skiddaw rising to the north
east adds to the dramatic setting whilst Grisedale Pike
and the Whinlatter Pass add to the atmosphere westward.
The combination of whitewashed, historic lakeland cottages,
village green and Chapel Beck flowing through the village
makes for an idyllic setting.
Roman and Briton remains in the vicinity highlight
the fact that the area was settled here from the earliest
times. During the 1800's mines in the area were operating,
and corn mills and other trades were active.
The Tennyson Link
The 13th century Church of St Bega (another name for
Saint Bee), restored in 1874, nestles close to Bassenthwaite
Lake, some two miles south of Bassenthwaite village
and is reached by a trek across fields. The church's
setting was the inspiration for Tennyson's 'Morte d'Arthur'
penned in 1835. He described it thus:
"..to a chapel nigh the field,
A broken chancel with a broken cross,
That stood on a dark straight of barren land,'..
The historic 17th century manor house, Mirehouse, is
close by on Bassenthwaite's eastern shore. Gardens,
walks, and original furniture highlight the lived-in
family home.
Paths lead from the village to circular walks in the
vicinity. There are far reaching views from the summits
of nearby fells.
Places of interest
Mirehouse
Mirehouse is a delightful 17th century manor house close
to the eastern shore of the lake, and within sight of
the church. Open to the public during the summer months,
it contains a Victorian schoolroom and nursery with
much of its original furniture. In the grounds are wooded
walks and a 19th century sawmill has been converted
into tea rooms.

St Bega's Church
Standing alone in a romantic setting on the shores of
the lake, the church can be reached by a footpath from
the village. The building is Norman but it is situated
on the site of a much earlier church. St Bega was an
Irish Noblewoman who founded the seventh century Benedictine
nunnery at what is now St Bees.
