Hethersgill & Kirkcambeck
This stretch of the route is literally
dotted with lots of tiny communities. Hadrian's Wall
passes through the district and traces of it still remain
in several places. If you want to take a look at Hadrian's
Wall you can head down the lanes to Brampton, or to
Lanercost just a few miles away.
The area is packed with the remains
of pele towers in varying
states of preservation.
Walton
is a lovely village and is believed to take
its name from the Roman Wall like many other place names
round here.
Hethersgill
Hethersgill has peat extraction as its main
industry. Pubs in Hethersgill and in nearby Boltonfelland
will keep you lubricated on your journey.
Kirkcambeck
Kirkcambeck is a small hamlet clustered around
a relatively modern church - the original 11th century
church was destroyed down by the Scots and only an archway
remains in the grounds of the new church. Close by is
Askerton Castle with its rich Reivers history.
Places of interest
Askerton Castle
Although now a private residence, Askerton Castle is
still well worth a visit. Originally built as a fortified
house in the 15th century, pele towers were later added.
The castle saw extensive action during the Reiver period
and was the home of Belted Will, the infamous Warden
of the Marches.
Lanercost Priory
Just a few miles from the route sits Lanercost Priory
amidst the isolated farms and cottages comprising Hadrians
Wall country. Founded by Robert de Vaux in 1166, Lanercost
is a fascinating place with a well-documented history
and there is plenty to explore, both as a medieval ruin
and as a present day church.
Being in such close proximity to the Scottish Borders
life at Lanercost was less than peaceful, and the priory's
history was turbulent. Raid after raid damaged the Priory,
the most devastating one coming in 1346 when King David
II of Scotland ransacked the monastic buildings, desecrated
the priory church, and wasted lands belonging to the
priory.
