Route Changes/Developments

Deterioration of kerb - Cargo nr Carlisle
The section of main road leading out of Rockcliffe past Cargo (milemarkers 113-116) can be very dangerous owing to the large numbers of HGVs particularly those accessing the Cargo Sawmill. The problems have been exacerbated by the HGV trailers churning up the road edge leading to deep gullies. Please take extra care along this section as if you are forced into the gullies you will be luck to stay on your bike. The problems have been reported to the highways authorities.
Reported by Stephen Sidgwick - May 2007

Improved Signage - Wideopen
N ew waggonways and RCR10 signs are going in on the stretch between Royal Quays and the A1 at WideOpen April/May 2007 following a review and audit by Graeme Clark Cycling Officer NTCouncil and Doug Ridgway Sustrans Liaison Ranger. These signs will enhance the route and give cyclists an idea of destinations and distances.
Reported by Phil Goldblatt, Sustrans Ranger - April 2007

Signage problems - Ponteland
Signage problems are reported in Ponteland in the region of the Bowling and Tennis club (milemarker 7-8). As a result, riders have apparently missed the turn off on the B6323 (shortly after the main X-roads in Ponteland) that takes you onto the bridleway that passes behind the houses, parallel to the road. Therefore please take care during this section of the ride. The official Reivers route map has a detailed close-up of the offending area so pay close attention to it.
Reported by Mark Webster - May 2006

Facilities - Hethersgill
The official route map shows café facilities here; this used to be provided by the village pub - the Black Horse - but it's changed hands and does not serve coffees, etc and rarely opens during the day on weekdays. This is the only outlet in the village.
Reported by Mark Webster - May 2006

Access problems - Dalston
The signed route back onto the River Caldew via Metcalfe Street (milemarker 123-124) is inaccessible because of new houses being built. To access the river path go past Metcalfe Street and take the next but one road to the left, George Street. There is a temporary path, around the side of the blue fences edging the building site, back to the riverside trail.
Reported by Mark Webster - May 2006

Road closure - Rockcliffe
The level crossing, beyond the M6 bridge (milemarkers 111-112), is currently under reconstruction and the road is closed to ALL users. As a result take the third left after Westlington to find an alternative route over the M6 and railway to enter Rockcliffe from the East, rather the North.
Reported by Mark Webster - May 2006

Diversion - North Shields Fish Quay
A major diversion is in place in North Shields affecting the Reivers, C2C and Hadrian's Cycleway (HCW) routes. Full details are provided on the HCW Website.Check out the HCW website
Reported by Doug Ridgway, Sustrans Ranger - February 2006

Replacement / Improved Signage - Seaton Burn to Ponteland
Sustrans will be conducting a 'signing weekend' on the 8th/9th April to review and replace signs on the Reivers Route from Seaton Burn to Ponteland.
Reported by Phil Goldblatt, Sustrans Ranger - February 2006

Weetslade Improvements
Great news. Weetslade Country Park (milemarkers 10 to 11) - once a haven for off road motorcycles, now a haven for wildlife - is going to be officially opened in June 06 and run by Northumberland Wildlife Trust. This now has a tarmac path running the whole length and good metal barriers either end to stop the motorcycles causing havoc.
Reported by Phil Goldblatt, Sustrans Ranger - February 2006

New Waggonway Signs in North Tyneside
These unmistakable signs (example below) have been placed at a number of locations along the historic Waggonway which commences at around milemarker 3. A welcome aesthetic improvement that should help keep you on track.
(Contribution by Doug Ridgway, Sustrans Ranger - August 2005)

Reclamation work between Shiremoor and Backworth
This section (between milemarkers 6 and 7 on the route map) is being reclaimed in advance of the build of the second stage of the Shiremoor Bypass road. The pit heaps around this area are an easy place to get lost so be extremely cautious when navigating this area. The signage is currently poor but Sustrans Rangers hope to effect improvements very soon. Note also that there is a lot of heavy plant equipment moving around the area so proceed very carefully.
Reported by Doug Ridgway, Sustrans Ranger - August 2005

Signage Improvements from Royal Quays to Shiremoor
August 2005 saw Sustrans Rangers improving the signage between Royal Quays and Shiremoor (milemarkers 3 to 6 on the route map) with stick-on Reivers Route 10 signs. Signage has been problematic in this area in the past so this represents a big step forward.
Reported by Doug Ridgway, Sustrans Ranger - August 2005

Surface Problems in High Weetslade
The section from High Weetslade to the Great North Road (milemarkers 10 to 11) is being resurfaced, the current results of which have been described as "quicksand"! Please take care when negotiating this section especially as there is a lot of heavy plant moving around.
Reported by Tony Flannery - August 2005

More news in Weetslade
The Weetslade 'pit heap' section (milemarkers 10 to 11) is currently signed temporarily by the contractors on site as the ‘footpath’. The path is flanked by metal fencing to keep people off the site as it is being converted into a country park around what should be the Sandy Lane bypass one day. At first sight the route seems to disappear in amongst the fencing but as you approach it is fairly clear where to go.
Reported by Phil Goldblatt, Sustrans Ranger - September 2005

General Advice

Carlisle - Dalston route changes
With the completion of the Carlisle to Dalston Cycle Path in 2001, this off-road section following the River Caldew replaces the original meandering tarmac route round Burgh by Sands. The revised route is shown on the 2002 map. Please take care when departing from Carlisle as several old signs still remain causing general confusion to cyclists. Use the inset map of Carlisle provided in the official map to help guide you onto the Dalston Cycle Path.

Whitley Bay removed from official route
The 1998 route map included Whitley Bay as an optional starting point for the Reivers re-joining the route at Backworth. With the introduction of the 2002 map this option has now ceased as an official route. For people staying overnight in Whitley Bay, a coastal path leads from Whitley Bay down to the official start point in Tynemouth.

Ensure that you have the latest (2002) edition Substantial changes were made to the route in 2002 reducing the overall length from 187 to 171 miles.
