Getting There

Given the that cycling is an environmentally sound mode of transport, why spoil all that good work by taking your car to the start point. Sustrans encourage all long-haul cyclists to use the train. The following will help make that task a little easier.

Tynemouth

The main Inter-City services operate into Newcastle-upon-Tyne. On GNER (tel: 08457 225 225) cycles are carried free on most services. However, reservations must be made 24 hours in advance as space is limited. Virgin Trains (tel: 08457 222 333) similarly do not charge for cycles but reservations are mandatory. Reservations are subject to availability and are not guaranteed.

Newcastle-upon-Tyne is linked to Tynemouth by the Metro network. Disappointingly, cycles are NOT allowed on the Metro trains. However, you can cycle along the C2C route to Tynemouth (approx 10 miles on the flat).

For Metro information call the Nexus Travel Line on 0870 608 2608 or browse to www.tyneandwearmetro.co.uk

Whitehaven

The Whitehaven-Carlisle-Newcastle route is served by Northern Rail who can accommodate cycles on all routes where space permits. However, most trains can only accommodate two bicycles. No extra charges are levied on cycles. Bicycle spaces can be reserved on certain services (Tel. 0845 600 8008). On all other services, space is allocated on a first-come, first-served basis subject to space being available.

Travel Tips

If the train operating company allows reservations to be made then make sure you do so and as far in advance as possible. Given that some operators are less than delighted to accommodate bicycles (even if you have reserved spaces) it is recommended that you avoid traveling at the peak periods in the morning and afternoon rush hours when space is at a premium. Not getting your bike on a train can have a disastrous impact on your ride so reduce the risks as much as possible.
