Stamfordham

A Planned Village
Situated in an area steeped in the history
of the Romans and the Border Reivers, Stamfordham is
a beautiful example of an eighteenth century planned
village. The name Stamfordham is Old English for 'homestead
by the stony ford'.
Located on the River Pont, the houses
stand round a large village green, towards the western
end of which stands the Market Cross, built in 1735
by Sir Edward Swinburne of Capheaton.
The village boasts
two traditional English country pubs, the Bay
Horse and the Swinburne Arms. The former dates back
to 1590 and was originally a fortified farm before becoming
a coaching inn.
Places of interest
Church of St.Mary
The first recorded reference to a church at Stamfordham
dates back to 1220. The church was rebuilt in 1848 to
a design by Benjamin Ferrey. Much of the original stonework
was used in this restoration.
Dedicated to St. Mary, like many other churches in
Northumberland, the church at Stamfordham has had a
turbulent history. Proximity to Scotland made the church
vulnerable to attack. In 1374 livestock belonging to
the vicar of Stamfordham was stolen and his servants
were attacked. At the outbreak of the Civil War, the
vicar, Thomas Stevenson, was imprisoned and had his
possessions seized several times.
