About Sustrans
Sustrans
- the sustainable transport charity - works on practical projects
to encourage people to walk, cycle and use public transport
in order to reduce motor traffic and its adverse effects.
Sustrans provides solutions to transport, environmental and
health challenges. It is easy to focus on the problems created
by increased car use, but Sustrans believes that by working
together, we can make life better.
By changing the way we travel now, by increasing
the amount people walk and cycle, will improve our lives in
the future. Clearer roads, cleaner air and a healthier environment,
improved personal well being and better quality of life, are
all aims of Sustrans.
Sustrans runs a number of key projects which have real local
impact. Sustrans' flagship project is the National Cycle Network
which is a massive series of signed cycling and walking routes
linking communities to schools, stations and city centres,
as well as to beautiful countryside.
The National Cycle Network
The
National
Cycle Network offers over 8,000 miles of signed, safe
and attractive cycle routes in the UK. By 2005, some 10,000
miles will put over half of the UK population within two miles
of the Network.
One third of the Network is on traffic-free paths, with the
rest on quiet minor roads and traffic-calmed streets. These
well-marked routes provide fantastic leisure opportunities,
as well as links into towns for schools, work and stations.
Disused railway lines, canal towpaths, riversides and parks,
bringing the countryside right into town and city centres.
For walkers and cyclists, young and old, those with prams
and wheelchairs.
