Tynemouth

A Roman Port
Tynemouth is steeped in history a fact that will become
abundantly clear should you start your visit at the
picturesque Priory and Castle that has stood guard over
the River Tyne for centuries.
Perched high above the North Sea, Tynemouth
was a supply port in the time of Roman occupation and
was used to supply the nearby Hadrian's Wall with much
needed provisions. The now ruined priory was built by
monks from the Holy Island of Lindisfarne in the 7th
century.
Tynemouth village is a short distance from the beach
and there you'll find a mix of antique shops, fashion
boutiques, eating places and superb village pubs. There
are also weekly markets at the old station in Tynemouth
Sandy Beaches
Located adjacent to the Priory is the building of the
Tynemouth Volunteer Life Brigade which was the first
of its kind in the world and is still operational today.
You can visit the museum and discover stories of shipwrecks
and dramatic rescue attempts throughout the years of
its existence.
The award-winning Tynemouth Longsands is a glorious
sandy beach where, on a hot summers day, you could be
forgiven for thinking you were sunning it up abroad
rather than the English north east coast.
