Skiddaw - Northern Fells
At 3,054 feet, Skiddaw is the fourth highest mountain in England. Lying just north of Keswick, it dominates the skyline of the northern lakes. The most popular ascent is via the tourist track which starts from Keswick and first ascends behind Latrigg, before the climb continues over the slopes of Little Man to the summit. Not the sort of walk for those seeking solitude though.

Wainwright's recommendation is to follow Longside Edge, first ascending Ullock Pike, Long Side and Carl Side before making the steep climb up from Carlside Col. The summit ridge bears a number of tops and cairns and stone windshelters abound. The view is panoramic encompassing the Pennines and Solway Firth in addition to the more expected main ranges of the Lake District.

High Stile - Western Fells
High Stile at 2,648 ft with its satellites Red Pike and High Crag, forms a trio of fells overlooking the lake and village of Buttermere. Unsurprisingly the fell is usually ascended as a traverse of the 'Buttermere Three'. Strong walkers may continue the walk towards Haystacks, four miles to the south east.

The view is extensive, the highlight perhaps being the North Western Fells across the Buttermere valley. Ennerdale Water and Crummock Water are in view and careful steps toward the brink can also add Bleaberry Tarn to the picture. Fine views of the crags of the surrounding combs complete the foreground.
