Whitley Bay

View of St Mary's Lighthouse

A great coastline
One of the best known of Tynemouth's seaside resorts, Whitley Bay offers a great coastline, one of the most painted and photographed icons in the UK and a party atmosphere people travel hundreds of miles for.

The beach at Whitley Bay has been a magnet for holidaymakers for decades and even the lure of hot overseas holidays hasn't stopped visitors and residents alike using the local sands when the British weather allows.

St. Mary's Lighthouse stands as a beacon on its own island and has done now for over 100 years. Although not in active service, the structure remains a popular draw for visitors and features in many a photographer's portfolio due to its stunning setting and appearance.

Wildlife abounds
The area surrounding the lighthouse is popular with divers and wildlife enthusiasts. The wetland area is home for large parts of the year to many rare species and the opportunities for a relaxing time and a bit of peace and quiet make this a much sought-after experience.

The resort has a unique atmosphere at weekends and Bank Holidays when the young and young at heart come to sample the nightlife from all over the UK and certainly don’t leave disappointed.

Places of interest

St. Mary's Island
This picturesque and popular spot is located at the far North of Whitley Bay. Located on the small island is a group of houses and a lighthouse/museum. Access to the island is via a causeway which becomes submerged at high tide.
